Short verdict: if you are staying on the Antalya coast, Suluada is the one you can actually do in a day. Ölüdeniz is a place you travel to and stay in, not a morning drive from your hotel.
Ölüdeniz is a lagoon and beach resort near Fethiye, on the south-west coast, in Muğla province. It is famous for the sheltered blue-green lagoon inside a protected nature park, for the long pebble beach beside it, and for the paragliders coming off the mountain above.
Suluada is a small rocky island off the Adrasan coast, west of Antalya. You can only reach it by boat. A light-sand bay, water that turns turquoise in the reflection, pine-clad cliffs — which is how it picked up the nickname Turkish Maldives.
Our island day is simple and public. The Suluada boat tour from Side runs every day: pickup between 05:30 and 06:00, sailing from Adrasan harbour at 09:40, docked back at 16:00, around ten hours door to door, minimum age 6. The Antalya departure sails Tuesday and Thursday all year, plus Saturday from April to October, with an 08:30–09:00 pickup window and a day of roughly twelve hours. What Ölüdeniz Is
Ölüdeniz sits near Fethiye, in Muğla province — a different province from Antalya, well beyond the stretch of Lycian coast our boats sail. Its fame rests on the lagoon: a still, sheltered inlet inside a protected nature park, with a long pebble beach beside it and a high mountain rising behind the village.
Paragliders launch from the mountain above the beach — that is the second reason people go. The village itself is a full resort — hotels, restaurants, dive shops, and its own boats heading out to nearby bays and coves.
Two honest notes. The lagoon is a protected area with managed access and its own rules, so check what is open on the day rather than assuming. And Ölüdeniz is somewhere you stay, not somewhere you drop into from an Antalya hotel: the road west is long, and the best hours of your day would be spent on it. The Suluada Day in Short
Ours is a one-destination day, and the boat is the only way in. From the Side region a vehicle comes for you in the 05:30–06:00 window, with an optional breakfast stop at Adrasan between the drive and the gangway; the boat casts off at 09:40 and is back alongside at 16:00. From central Antalya, Kemer and Beldibi the window is 08:30–09:00 and the day stretches to roughly twelve hours.
What fills it is water — the twin beaches, the white bay, the Love Cave, sheltered coves along the way. The boat anchors near the island and, where conditions allow, tender boats bring guests in. Life jackets on request, non-swimmers welcome, minimum age 6 on the Side departure. Grilled fish or chicken with pasta or rice, Turkish mezes, seasonal salad, then fruit and tea are cooked on board; drinks at the bar are not included and there is no shop on the island. The price is €40 per adult and €30 per child aged 4–10, infants free, identical from every pickup point — booked free online, paid on the tour day, cancelled free up to 24 hours before departure. A Lagoon You Walk Into, an Island You Sail To
One you reach on foot. One you cannot. Ölüdeniz's lagoon is entered from the shore, inside a protected park with managed access and its own rules. Suluada cannot be reached on foot at all. The boat anchors near the island and, where conditions allow, tender boats shuttle guests into the bay — that crossing is not an obstacle on the way to the swim, it is part of what you booked.
A base, not an excursion. This is the honest point. Ölüdeniz is somewhere you book a hotel and stay; the lagoon, the beach and the village all reward several days. Suluada is the opposite shape — one day, fixed hours, back at your own hotel the same night. Try to squeeze Ölüdeniz into a day trip from the Antalya coast and you will spend the best hours of it on the road.
What the water asks of you. A lagoon lets you wade in and stop whenever you like. Suluada is open Mediterranean water off a small rocky island, entered from a boat. Life jackets are available on request and non-swimmers are welcome — plenty of guests stay close to the boat and enjoy the day exactly as much — but it is worth knowing which of the two your group actually wants before you book either.
Base Yourself There, or Spend a Day Here
- You are on holiday in Side, Manavgat, Antalya or Kemer and have one free day: Suluada. It is the sea day you can genuinely fit into your week.
- You want a beach base rather than a day out: Ölüdeniz. Go and stay there — the lagoon, the beach and the paragliding deserve more than a long drive each way.
- You want to swim from a boat, not from a shore: Suluada. The whole day is built around getting into open water.
- You are already in Fethiye: stay west and enjoy it. Our boats do not run a transfer from that side of the coast.
