Suluada vs the Maldives: Does the Nickname Hold Up?

It is the bay. Suluada's sand is pale, the shallows are shallow for a long way, and the light bounces back up as that improbable milky turquoise you normally associate with the Indian Ocean. Add pine cliffs falling straight into clear water, twin beaches and the Love Cave, and the comparison writes itself.

The day is honest about what it is: a boat day. Every cruise sails from Adrasan harbour — your pickup point only changes the road leg. From the Side region you are collected between 05:30 and 06:00, the boat leaves Adrasan at 09:40, docks back at 16:00, and door to door you are out for about ten hours. Minimum age on this departure is 6.

In between: swimming breaks at the island and the surrounding bays, including the sheltered water of Domuz Bay, with tender boats shuttling guests to the bay where conditions allow. Lunch is cooked on board — grilled fish or chicken with pasta or rice, daily Turkish mezes, seasonal salad, then fruit and Turkish tea. The Maldives is a country: a long chain of coral atolls scattered across the Indian Ocean, made of hundreds of very low-lying islands. The classic holiday is one resort island for a week — overwater or beachfront villas, house reefs off the beach, boat or seaplane transfers between islands, and diving and snorkelling as the main activity.

Its colour comes from the same physics as Suluada's — white carbonate sand and shallow water — but at a completely different scale, with coral reefs and reef fish that the Mediterranean does not have. It is also a long-haul destination reached by a flight of many hours from Europe, planned months ahead.

Scale. The Maldives is an entire archipelago and a whole tourism economy. Suluada is one island and one famous bay — there is no shop on the island, so bring what you need.

Marine life. Maldivian reefs are the point of going there. Suluada is Mediterranean: clear, bright, lovely for swimming and snorkelling from the boat, but no coral atoll. Anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something.

What you take home. From the Maldives, a week of reef and quiet. From Suluada, a single vivid day: the crossing, the anchorage, the walk into that shallow turquoise, lunch on deck, the ride back at 16:00.

Go to the Maldives if your goal is a diving or reef holiday, a honeymoon on one island, or a week of doing very little a long way from home — and your budget and calendar are built for it.

Take the Suluada day if you are already on the Turkish coast and want the closest thing to that water without another flight.
